Morocco’s hopes of defending their African Nations Championship (CHAN) may be dashed after their plane failed to take off after a lengthy wait at Rabat Airport.

The 2021 champions withdrew from the tournament on Thursday, reportedly because the Algerian government denied their request to fly directly there on Morocco’s national airline.

Organizers, on the other hand, remained upbeat.

“What we are seeing today is that the Moroccan national team, which is currently present in the airport’s waiting room, is a pity,” said Faouzi Lekjaa, President of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF).

For years and months, young people have worked to prepare for this championship, and preparations have been made on all sides to participate in the championship and defend the title.
