When Cristiano Ronaldo joined Manchester United in the summer of 2021, fans started dreaming again. In a way, it was the return of a prodigal son.
During his first spell at Old Trafford, Cristiano Ronaldo went from being a generational hopeful to being the best player in the world.
The superstar joined Real Madrid in 2009 for a record fee after scoring 118 goals in 292 games for the Red Devils.
After a glorious spell at Real Madrid and a high-profile spell at Juventus, Ronaldo made headlines when he joined United in 2021. The Portuguese, understandably, were emotional.
When asked about what it was like to return to the club at the age of 36, Cristiano Ronaldo said (via the Manchester United official website):
“I think it’s the best decision I’ve made.” This is exactly what is needed, in my opinion. I moved from Juventus now to Manchester; it’s a new chapter; I’m so happy and content, and I want to continue again, make history, try to help Manchester achieve great results, win trophies, and win big things.
He was then asked how he felt about calling himself a United player once again. Ronaldo replied:
“Well, as you know, I have a fantastic history with this amazing club. I was there when I was 18 and, of course, I’m very happy to be back home after 12 years. So I’m very happy and eager to start my first game.
The Portuguese ace’s comeback game has only raised expectations for him. Ronaldo netted a brace against Newcastle United. In total, the number seven has scored 24 goals in 38 matches. 7 scored 24 goals in 38 appearances and was United’s top scorer last season.
However, things have taken a turn for the worse this season. He failed to get along with new manager Erik ten Hag, and an explosive interview with Piers Morgan drove the final nail in his United career. Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract with Manchester United was terminated by mutual agreement on November 22.
