England intends to wear the ‘OneLove’ armband during the World Cup, and the Football Association is in talks with FIFA about the possible consequences ahead of Monday’s opener against Iran.

Harry Kane is one of nine European captains who plan to wear rainbow armbands in a country where same-sex relationships are illegal.

Despite FIFA announcing plans for its own armband on the eve of the tournament, the FA is prepared to be fined over the issue and has reiterated its decision to wear the ‘OneLove’ armband against discrimination.

Wearing the armband may result in an immediate booking before a ball is kicked, which could cause havoc because two yellow cards result in a one-match ban.

The FA is seeking clarification from football’s world governing body on the issue, which Kane and manager Gareth Southgate fully support.

“I think we’ve made it clear as a team, a staff, and an organization that we want to wear the armband,” England captain Kane said.

“I know the FA is in talks with FIFA right now, and I’m sure they’ll have a decision by tomorrow’s game.” But, yes, I believe we’ve stated our desire to wear it.”

When asked for his thoughts on the apparent threat of a yellow card, Southgate replied, “There’s nothing I can add to what Harry has said.”

“I’m aware that some discussions are taking place. I believe several European countries have spoken.

“We’ve stated our case, so hopefully everything will be settled before the game.”
