Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said Southampton were the better side after losing 2-0 at St Mary’s in the Carabao Cup.Sekou Mara and Moussa Djenepo scored for the Saints, who knocked out the Premier League champions on Wednesday night.

Guardiola changed his starting XI for this clash but quickly introduced Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland in the second half. However, the arrival of these big names did not save City from a surprise loss to the bottom side in the Championship.

“The best team won.” We didn’t play well; we didn’t play well at the start.

“There are a lot of games you can start badly and overcome, and we didn’t,” Guardiola told 5 Live.
He added: “Today was a bad night, but the opponent was better, and we have to congratulate him.” To win games, you have to deserve them, and tonight we didn’t deserve them.

Guardiola must now prepare his men for Saturday’s Manchester Derby at Old Trafford.
