Chelsea favourite Pat Nevin has backed his former club to do the “right thing” following the “vile” abuse aimed at Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn on Saturday.

A video has emerged on social media of what appear to be sectarian slurs being shouted towards the Scotland international as he prepared to take a corner in front of home supporters at Stamford Bridge.

In a statement, Chelsea confirmed they are investigating the incident and have urged anyone with any information to call a phone line.

Villa also released a statement, condemning the incident and thanking Chelsea for their swift action.

Pundit and former Chelsea midfielder Nevin, who received sectarian abuse during his own career, has spoken out on the issue and plans to hold talks with the club.
