‘Race against pain’ – Thomas Tuchel drops Chelsea selection hints for Aston Villa clash

Thomas Tuchel has dropped hints about his team selection for Chelsea’s Carabao Cup clash with Aston Villa.

The Blues boss held his pre-match press conference on Tuesday afternoon and admitted he is ready to make changes to the side which defeated Tottenham on Sunday.

The head coach suggested both Ruben Loftus-Cheek and new signing Saul Ñíguez are likely to feature against Dean Smith ’s side.

Tuchel praised Loftus-Cheek, who has played just one minute so far this season. “We gave him some minutes against Zenit, that was not a gift, he deserved, I trust him because I see how he works.

“He adapts and accepts his situation. What he makes out of it is good on a daily basis. There’s a good chance we will see him on the pitch tomorrow.”

Tuchel added: “Of course we want to give Saul some minutes. We need some players to have more competitive minutes.

“We want to have a competitive team, at the same time use the opportunity to push some guys and push them in a competitive cup match. We will have some changes but I will not give you the line up. “

However, goalkeeper Edouard Mendy will not feature after picking up a knock in the Champions League and missing the London derby.

“Mendy cannot play and he is not training so far. We will do what we can for Saturday. He could train on Thursday but it is a race against pain and race against time, I think it [Saturday] is possible. “
