Man United could be without three of their first-choice back four against Villarreal

After what seemed like a great start to the season for Manchester United, recent results have seen the club enter their first ‘crisis’ of the campaign after just eight games in all competitions.

After starting the season with three wins and a draw from their first four games, United have seen their season turned upside down in the next four.

They were beaten away from home at Young Boys in the Champions League group stage opener and were lucky to earn a win over West Ham in the Premier League thanks to an injury-time penalty save by David De Gea.

They followed that up by being comfortably beaten by the Hammers in the Carabao Cup as they were eliminated at the first hurdle three days later at Old Trafford, before defeat to Aston Villa in the Premier League at the weekend.

Arguably more worrying than the results for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer‘s side have been the performances of particular players in key positions.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka was sent off against Young Boys for a reckless tackle, Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw haven’t looked themselves since returning from Euro 2020 duty with England, Fred has been awful for the most part in midfield and Jadon Sancho has made a slow start to his United career.

With a huge clash against Villarreal on Wednesday in the Champions League, Solskjaer has some decisions to make and it’s time that he showed he is learning from previous mistakes.

Despite the defeats in recent games, Diogo Dalot and Donny Van de Beek have turned in decent individuals performances when given the chances to play. United’s attacking depth is arguably unmatched across Europe so there is enough quality to be able to rotate and still win games, while defensively there is enough quality to make up for missing players.

Dalot and Van de Beek have impressed in recent outings

In midweek United are likely to be without three of their first-choice back four, with Wan-Bissaka suspended and Maguire and Shaw are doubts with injuries that forced them off against Aston Villa on Saturday. That means as well as Dalot, United are likely to start with Alex Telles and Victor Lindelof in a must-win game.
