The Italy captain was speaking ahead of the Blues’ clash with Juventus in the Champions League on Tuesday night as Thomas Tuchel looks to defend the title he won in May.

If Jorginho were to win the award, one that is given to the best footballer from that specific year, he would become just the second player other than Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo to pick it up since 2008.

Luka Modric won the award in 2018 and Chiellini believes his “good friend” Jorginho deserves the honour for his ability to slot so seamlessly into any side he is a part of.
Both Messi and Robert Lewandowski remain favourites for the award. The former led his country to a Copa America title while Lewandowski broke the goalscoring record in the Bundesliga.
Jorginho is currently ranked in fourth, behind Chelsea team-mate and fellow midfielder N’Golo Kante.
