Chiellini brouhaha on Jorginho deserving the Ballon D’or

Jorginho has a strong claim to the Ballon d'Or this year after winning both the Champions League with Chelsea and Euro 2020 with Italy, and Giorgio Chiellini is the latest to weigh in on the debate

Giorgio Chiellini is the latest player to back Chelsea midfielder Jorginho to win the 2021 Ballon d’Or following a year in which he won the Champions League and European Championship.

“He has great technical qualities, but the real difference is in his head. Many said he was always able to play with Sarri, but everywhere he goes he is a regular starter, I really hope he will win the Ballon d’Or.”

The Italy captain was speaking ahead of the Blues’ clash with Juventus in the Champions League on Tuesday night as Thomas Tuchel looks to defend the title he won in May.

If Jorginho were to win the award, one that is given to the best footballer from that specific year, he would become just the second player other than Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo to pick it up since 2008.

Chiellini: “I truly hope Jorginho will be able to win it (Ballon d’Or), because he’s a good friend of mine. I’d always thought that Jorginho was a good player but after two or three training sessions in the national team, I’m talking about two or three years ago.”

Luka Modric won the award in 2018 and Chiellini believes his “good friend” Jorginho deserves the honour for his ability to slot so seamlessly into any side he is a part of.

Both Messi and Robert Lewandowski remain favourites for the award. The former led his country to a Copa America title while Lewandowski broke the goalscoring record in the Bundesliga.

Jorginho is currently ranked in fourth, behind Chelsea team-mate and fellow midfielder N’Golo Kante.
