Chelsea must go all out to convince Antonio Rudiger to sign a new contract with the Blues, according to Rio Ferdinand and Joe Cole. The German defender has emerged as one of the club’s most important players since the turn of the year and is one of the first names on the team sheet under Thomas Tuchel.
Rudiger played a significant role in leading the club to last season’s Champions League triumph, with Chelsea only conceding once in the knockout stages of the competition.
He has since retained his spot in Tuchel’s back three, playing every minute in the Premier League since the beginning of the new campaign.
However, the 28-year-old will be out of contract at the end of the season and is no closer to agreeing a new deal after weeks of negotiations.
A number of top European clubs are believed to be keeping tabs on Rudiger’s situation, including the likes of Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich.
It remains to be seen whether he will eventually decide to extend his stay at Stamford Bridge or seek a new challenge next year after five seasons in west London.
Speaking ahead of Chelsea’s meeting with Juventus in the Champions League on Tuesday evening, Ferdinand underlined Tuchel’s reliance on Rudiger, who he believes is currently the best defender in England.
“At the moment, yeah,” Ferdinand told BT Sport.
“I think Dias last season was the best overall, but since Tuchel’s come, I think he’s been the most commanding centre-back in the league.
“He’s been phenomenal. In terms of his absolute desire to win every ball, aggression.
