The rumours linking Real Madrid winger Marco Asensio to Barcelona are gathering steam. The 26-year-old has already admitted that he will sign for any club once his current contract ends in 2023, and now some old tweets of him have only added fuel to the fire.
Asensio joined Real Madrid in 2014 from fellow La Liga side Mallorca. The 26-year-old, who claims to be a lifelong supporter of Real Madrid, signed a six-year deal with the record European champions and arrived for a mere €3.9 million fee.
Three years before his Madrid transfer, however, the versatile winger had publicly shown his admiration for FC Barcelona.
The event dates back to 2011 when a Pep Guardiola-led Barcelona beat Manchester United 3-1 in the UEFA Champions League final. Taking to social media, Asensio had nothing but sheer admiration for the Bluagrana and their legendary forward Lionel Messi, who was on the scoresheet in the final.
“There is no one like Barça and less like Messi,” the winger had tweeted as reported by Spanish publication Diario SPORT.
Before that, he had also admitted that he will be supporting Barcelona in the final. “I will go with Barça,” he had tweeted.
To say this was the only time he had celebrated Barcelona winning a title would be a sheer understatement. In the same season when the Catalan team won its 21st La Liga crown, he tweeted, “How great is Barça! Champions!”
As it seems, life has come full circle for the 26-year-old. If a move to Barcelona does materialise next summer, he would become the first high-profile player to directly switch the alliance between the two teams since the controversial transfer of Luis Figo to Real Madrid in 2000.
