Erik ten Hag, the Manchester United manager, expressed his displeasure with Premier League referees’ lack of consistency during the team’s recent draw against Southampton. The frustration came after Casemiro received a red card for a tackle on Carlos Alcaraz towards the end of the first half.

The match had several controversial decisions, including Armel Bella-Kotchap’s unpunished handball in the box and Marcus Rashford’s penalty appeal that was turned down in the second half. Speaking after the game, Ten Hag criticized the inconsistency of the officials, stating that players don’t know what the policy is.

Ten Hag went on to say that the lack of consistency in refereeing standards was not unique to his team’s match and cited the Leicester vs Chelsea game from the previous day, where VAR was not used in a contentious decision. He added that Casemiro’s red card was the second time he had been sent off this season and questioned the fairness of the decision.

The Manchester United manager further lamented the Brazilian’s suspension for the next four domestic matches, saying that Casemiro is a fair player who has never received a red card in over 500 games across European leagues.
Ten Hag concluded by calling for consistency in refereeing standards across all games and decisions, stating that the isolation of one incident for punishment is unfair. He pointed to the Crystal Palace game in February, where Casemiro received a red card, as another example of inconsistency.
